The Organic Farm

The house lies in the middle of 9 hectares of land (approx. 23 acres) forming a rough square sloping downhill from west to east. The major part of the farmland is planted with a mixture of 5 types of mature olive tree producing an excellent olive oil pressed on the premises.

The remaining land is thickly wooded and overgrown giving shelter to wildlife and birds including boar, porcupine, hoopoes and golden orioles. Paths have been made through this. Near the house are 3 terraces for growing vegetables, a pond or irrigation tank, and many mature fruit trees.

A stone-clad barn housing farm equipment lies to the side of the house. There is a veranda on the South side off the main sitting room and a patio by the barn for outside dining. The gardens which surround the house contain an aviary.

The current British-American owners purchased this property in 1989 when it was in a somewhat dilapidated condition and still being farmed by tenants who had lived and farmed there for 3 generations. A modest conversion and restoration was undertaken and 2 of the owners have lived on the farm full time since 1994.

The farm was naturally organic as the tenants had never been able to afford machinery or chemicals and the current owners were able to learn farming and planting methods from them which had been in use for centuries. However a tractor and other pieces of agricultural equipment were purchased and have been in use for the past 20 years.

Olives are harvested every Autumn and pressed in a small mill on the premises to produce a superb oil. The Vendemmia, or wine harvest takes place in September and enough red and white wine is made for home consumption all year round.

A fine vegetable garden produces fresh produce all year long and there are mature apricot, peach, plum, damson, pear and apple trees.
